My Therapeutic Approach

Parents and caregivers reach out for help for a variety of reasons. Some of these include when their child is experiencing out-of-control emotions like anger or fear, has endured a trauma or loss, is struggling with a life transition, or is having difficulties forming and sustaining positive relationships. These challenges can affect either or both home and school life. I offer several treatment modalities and work with your family to decide which approach or combination of approaches is the best fit:

Child-Centered Play Therapy

An evidenced-based approach that supports the healing power of play for children and their adults. Children naturally use play to work through unresolved emotions and conflicts. Often children do not have the words to express their feelings or are unable to speak about their troubles. Instead of asking a child to talk, play therapy allows a child to use toys, art, sand, and their creativity to express themselves and process their problems, find relief from stress, and develop insight and strategies for managing their world.

Parent Collaboration

Important adults in a child’s life are critical to their success and I walk alongside each family with whom I have the privilege of working to understand the vision you have for your child and family. Together, we apply the sciences of neurobiology and attachment to enhance your understanding of your child and thereby strengthen the relationship and deepen the connection. This naturally leads to greater emotional regulation and confidence in your child.

Theraplay-Informed Approach

One way in which I work with families to strengthen relationships, increase empathy and attunement, and just have fun together is through special play sessions with parents and their children. This approach focuses on family members’ strengths and abilities to work through and overcome challenges.
